Research programme
Renewing the centre ground
About the research programme
The renewing the centre ground research programme aims to understand how centrists can renew their message, rebuild their base, and play a real role in tackling extreme politics.
Our vision
Renewing our message
Using a mixture of research and polling, we are working to identify the shared values of those in the centre ground of UK politics. This strategy includes exploring key ideas that unite centrists across different parties and backgrounds.
Rebuilding our base
A core challenge for centrists is to support the middle class and to support those working hard to join it. Creating a broad middle class allows us to create a stable tax base, but it will require rebuilding the ladder of opportunity to ensure aspiration is attainable and demonstrating how we can create an economy where anyone can get ahead.
Tackling extreme politics
Extreme politics is a growing problem, fuelled by culture wars and the spread of extremism on social media. A core role for centrism must be to tackle those on the extremes of politics, to defend our democracy, and to deliver real solutions to the issues that push people towards the political extremes.
Our work
To understand the state of the centre ground today and to propose ways to grow the centre ground of politics, we worked with Millbank Think Tank on a poll to understand how the public labels their political beliefs.
