Christmas conversations 2023
Christmas conversations 2023
We may try to keep away from politics at the dinner table on Christmas Day, but it does not always happen! We have put together a guide to Christmas conversations that might come up, with all the answers you will need.
"Elderly people often struggle with loneliness, so what can we do to help?"
Our view
We urgently need to tackle loneliness; it is heartbreaking to think that people spend Christmas Day alone.
Elderly loneliness is an issue we can easily start to solve. One option is intergenerational care, where the young and elderly are looked after together rather than in nurseries and care homes. We support this kind of scheme as it offers the elderly some much-needed companionship and gives younger people the chance to learn from others. Local schemes, such as ‘Meet & Eat’, are also a great way to bring elderly people together.

"Can we not just drill for more oil and gas to bring down energy prices?"
Our view
Oil and gas may seem like easy solutions to the energy crisis, but they are not. After all, oil and gas will eventually run out and, when they do, we will be back where we started. We will then repeat the rising prices at the petrol pump and in the shops. This cycle will also contribute to climate change and damage the environment even further.
It is time we invested in solar panels, wind turbines, and hydropower. These alternatives will afford us a renewable, cleaner source of energy than we have today.

"Can we find common ground with family members if we disagree politically?"
Our view
We work with people from across the political spectrum. From our experience, we know that it is often possible to find common ground and to work together on the largest challenges facing the UK. It is not always possible, but there are times when it is worth looking at what unites us, rather than what divides us.

"The NHS is under real pressure this winter. What can we do to help?"
Our view
With the backlog of the pandemic and the pressures of winter, the NHS is under a great deal of strain.
As a result, we have put together a wide range of policies to fix the issues. For example, we propose prioritising the prevention of illnesses, exploring dispensable middle management positions, and increasing social care funding to reduce bed blocking, not to mention increased investment in mental health and a substantial cash injection into the NHS.

"Families are struggling this Christmas. How can we help them?"
Our view
Today, people are struggling to make ends meet. We have the energy crisis, driving up bills and prices, partly to blame. While we support the move to renewables, the government must also act to support those hardest hit and ensure that the economy continues to grow.
To protect the lowest paid and those out of work during this crisis, we support policies such as a Guaranteed Minimum income. This strategy would provide a basic standard of living without the bureaucracy associated with Universal Credit. Alongside this, the economy must be strengthened by simplifying taxes and regulations and offering greater support and advice to small businesses.
