Councillor and MP
Before entering parliament Stephen was councillor in Merton election in 2002 where he later became the Deputy Leader of the Conservative Group. He was elected as the Conservative MP for Wimbledon in 2005.
Stephen held multiple positions including the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport and Parliamentary Private Secretary to Eric Pickles. He was also the Shadow Minister for Transport under David Cameron.
A meaningful vote
During the Brexit negotiations Stephen rebelled against the government to get a ‘meaningful vote’ on the withdrawal agreement. As a result he was removed as Conservative party vice-chairman and temporarily lost the Conservative party whip. Stephen is now the Deputy Chair of the Conservative European Forum.
